Greece

Greece is located in southern Europe between Albania and Turkey and borders the Agean Sea, the Ionian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. The capital is Athens. In 2004 the population was estimated to be 10.6 million people with a growth rate of 0.2 percent. The official language is Greek while English and French are also spoken.

Greece has been a member of the European Union since 1992 and has received approximately 3.3 percent of its overall GDP each year in aid from the EU, including in 1995 when it received three billion pounds. However, GDP grew by 4.7 percent in 2003 and growth is expected to be similar in 2004 because of the presence of the Olympic Games in Athens. Greece is also trying to restruction its economy to privatise several state enterprises and create pensions, while minimising bureaucratic inefficiencies, reducing public debt and tackling inflation and unemployment, which is at almost ten percent. Greece currently has a debt of over £35 billion.
